spring celebrations guide entertaining tips from style maniac

New party and food ideas -- don't we all need them?  To bring you this one I partnered with talented creative friends to create a fresh take on a classic Tea.

We raided my cabinets and brain for tabletop goodies and entertaining tips, then added layers of Aubrie Costello's luxe, organic Silk Graffiti art and Jen Capozzi's gluten-free, sugar-free, delectably delicious Barlume Apothecary recipes to tabletop vignettes set up throughout my home.  For the final touch we asked our fab photographer friend Brae Howard to add her magic to the mix and document it all.

Read on for our tips, pics, ideas and recipes.  We hope this post inspires you to create your own celebration of style, soul, taste and talk for your next gathering with a smart and stylish woman you love.

ART Inspiration
from Aubrie Costello | Silk Graffiti

silk graffiti print by aubrie costello

Aubrie shreds yards of opulent silk to create custom ephemeral wall hangings and tablescapes by writing your most beloved words and quotes in billows of rich fabric.  Her commissioned work is one of a kind, and its creation is a mutual, often intense, collaboration that leads to unexpected and deeply meaningful results.  By popular demand Aubrie now also offers limited edition prints of select installations of her Silk Graffiti, like the one featured here. We love how this beach setting and phrase create the perfect mood for two smart, feminine and fun-loving women to sit back, relax and enjoy an afternoon of good food and lively conversation about books, art, travel, love and life.

Table Setting TIPS
from Doreen Creede | Style Maniac

Modern Tea book gift as placemat vintage hankie as napkin

Play with scale and purpose to spark conversation and smiles with my fun, colorful table setting tips:

  • Make the gifts -- in this case advance copies of our friend Kristy Woodson Harvey's novels -- do double duty as placemats.
  • Colorful Pantone espresso cups do double duty as well. Some serve tea while others hold jam and honey.
  • Add an Alice in Wonderland touch by using petite china coasters as plates. (These are from Jonathan Adler.)
  • Bring in a whimsical note of nostalgia with a creamer and sugar from a childhood tea set.
  • Re-purpose pretty vintage hankies as charming napkins.
  • Skip complicated flower arrangements.  Instead simply lay a bright bouquet of pink daisies directly on the table.

RECIPES
from Jen Capozzi | Barlume Apothecary

When last you met Jen, she had just opened a Barlume Apothecary storefront.  Now her business has evolved to private consultations and custom regimens that weave plant-based food and essential oils into a program to feed your body and soul.  We don't know how she does it, but as a plant-based chef and herbalist Jen utilizes only nourishing ingredients to create gluten-free, sugar-free meals and desserts that taste absolutely incredible.

For this meal, I challenged Jen to create a modern version of a British Tea -- without the bread and sugar.  Oh boy, did she deliver.  (Lucky us: after the shoot we got to gobble up her delicious creations!)

PHOTOS
by Brae Howard Photography

Having worked with Brae before, I knew what to expect from a photo shoot with her:  warm, calm competency that puts her wedding clients instantly at ease; fast shooting that makes biz clients repeat customers; and gorgeous results to please the most finicky stylist and lifestyle blogger (ahem).  In short, she is a dream to work with and the images she captured of this project elevated it to another level.
