Amazing what a palapa umbrella, a pair of plastic pink flamingos and a few chartreuse throw pillows can do to brighten your day. This setup on the side of our townhouse carport serves as an outdoor living room May through October. Mornings, we sip coffee, read the paper and catch up on emails. Come Thursday and Friday evenings we "stoop" it, a South Philly term for hanging out on your stoop and sharing drinks with neighbors. For minimal money (the umbrella came from a grocery store, the flamingos from Home Depot and the furniture from IKEA) we gained an outdoor room and best of all a delicious feeling of tropical escape just by walking out the door.
